The 5th Biennial Ruforum conference held from the 17th to the 21st of October was the first of its kind on South African soil. The conference took place at Century City Conference Centre in Cape Town and was hosted by the University of Stellenbosch and the Agricultural Research Council. This year’s theme was Linking Agricultural Universities with Civil society, the Private Sector, Governments and other stake holders in support of Agricultural Development in Africa.
I have been studying the lives of people I find inspirational, the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Thomas Edison, and Usain Bolt etc..., you know those who against all odds made it happen.
The ride was filled with expectation as we made our way to De La Vida Boran Farm in Port Alfred, Eastern Cape. This is an annual trip that the University of Fort Hare Animal Breeding class embark on, visiting Mr Jaco van Renbsurg, a Boran stud breeder. The nice weather - not
hot yet not too chilly created the perfect outdoor learning atmosphere.
It’s been a month since the annual South African Society for Animal Science (SASAS) congress was held in Stellenbosch, allowing me some time to reflect on the delightful yet educational experience of participating in the annual student quiz for the very first time. The quiz was exciting, in fact thrilling, because thought and action had to occur simultaneously. Imagine having to read a question, understand it, consult your team mates then press the button for the answer you all are convinced is correct, while time is not a good companion.
Dining, Wining and Excellence at the Gala dinner
The 49th SASAS congress gala dinner was held at the Stellenbosch town hall on the 06 of July 2016. All the delegates were a sight for sore eyes in their dashing outfits, something different from the usual lab coats and work-suits. The guests were treated to a fun-filled evening, which was accompanied by great music and entertainment from the Amish Gypsy band, Zamar - celebrating through the plucking of strings.
